Um jovem é encontrado vagando sozinho. Sem nome. Sem passado. Inocente como um recém-nascido, ele não fala e parece estar olhando para o mundo pela primeira vez. Sem nenhum lugar para levá-lo, a polícia o manda para um reformatório juvenil onde ele é dado o nome de Kyle. É óbvio que Kyle não é como outros garotos, mas quando é descoberto que ele não tem umbigo, o diretor passa a perceber como Kyle pode ser diferente. Ele chama Nicole Trager, uma assistente social, para ajudá-lo no caso. Sentindo algo especial de Kyle, Nicole leva o garoto para casa, a desgosto de seu marido, sua filha adolescente e seu jovem filho.
